Well. Early in the day yesterday, when there was a run on the grocery stores and panic seemed to reign, those of us from* Michigan, Minnesota, etc had a good laugh at these tender DC natives. “Snow-pocalypse” didn’t scare us, snow veterans that we are.
(*Please note that while I spent a good chunk of time in Michigan, I am actually from New Jersey. Don’t get confused.)
I took this picture of my car this morning. It took me 15 minutes to get to it, despite it being 20 yards away from the front door. I didn’t intend to drive anywhere, thank goodness.
Yesterday I heard rumblings from respected liberals I know about Obama’s speech on Thursday, announcing a new “legal strategy” (I believe those were his words) for keeping suspected terrorists in custody without charges or trials.
Possible the first thing that came to everyone’s mind was Spielberg’s movie, Minority Report. Just Google “Obama” and “Minority Report” and you’ll see what I mean.
Someone recommended Rachel Maddow’s segment, which I found on YouTube. I also dug around and found this fantastic article on ProPublica’s website, which will give you some nice context about holding people without due process in times of war.
The lines are not clear, this is not a black and white situation. I would advise anybody to do some reading before coming to any conclusions.
Thanks to WordPress’s easy 1-2-3 step process for acquiring a domain, I now own www.elizabethklucas.com. Don’t bother clicking on the link, though, because it will lead you right back here… for now. Since I am taking an intense bootcamp in Web programming next week, I hope this site will be my first project, and a hub for all things me-related.
Thus continues my personal branding. I’ve got elizabethklucas.wordpress.com (should also redirect here), elizabethklucas.com, elizabethklucas@gmail.com, and eklucas (Twitter).
Why the “k”, you ask?
Because Elizabeth Lucas is some famous Broadway director. Bummer. There are quite a few of us out there.
Anybody out there? I haven’t posted here in weeks, and if anyone’s noticed, I’m sorry. What can I say? I’m just finishing up my first year of grad school. They don’t believe in “free time”. But, over the summer (when free time is allowed) I have several projects in store for myself:
-learn programming languages
-write funky music on garage band with jess playing cello in the background
-be an assistant city editor
All of which, I’m sure, will provide me with interesting things to write about and entertain you with. So check back!
Globally, time spent in “member communities” (social networks) exceeds time spent in email.
“The story is consistent across the world, ‘Member Communities’ have taken a foothold in every major market from 50% of the online population in Switzerland and Germany to 80% in Brazil. Facebook has become the largest player on the global stage. The study found that Facebook’s greatest growth has come from 35-49 year-olds, and it has added twice as many 50-64 year-olds as those under 18. Now that social media has broken out of the youth demographic, the search for a workable ad model is even more urgent, says the report.”
I’ve just created a new category for this blog called “Economy,” because I have been coming across some really great resources on the economic crisis and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (more commonly known as the stimulus bill), and so I foresee some interesting and informative posts on these topics in the future.
Jess and I drove to our friends’ house for lunch yesterday, and on the way we listened to Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion. We ended up sitting in the car for 5 minutes after parking because we heard this great song, sung live by Kristin Chenoweth. Well, I found a video of her performing it previously, so check it out.
I can’t remember where I read this, but in some scholarly piece of literature somewhere someone developed a typology for intelligence. Where do you fit in?
Active intelligent: you are smart and assertive. you make things happen.
Passive intelligent: you are smart, but not a go-getter. you can be trusted, but not put in charge of things.
Active stupid: you are not smart but you are assertive. in other words, you should be watched carefully.
Passive stupid: you are not smart or assertive. just do what you do.
